Mission:
Organized in 1991, the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center
(CCCEEC) is designed to institutionalize the practice of Urban Environmental Education.

CCCEEC's mission is to preserve the quality of life for residents living in the Cobbs
Creek area of Philadelphia through the establishment of a center for educating and
informing people about issues affecting their environment. The goals of the program are
as follows:
--To maintain and enhance the historic building in Cobbs Creek Park for use by students,
teachers and the community.
-- Continuation of our programs for the Schools, Teacher Training, Summer Employment,
and the Community.
-- Expansion of the organization's funding levels, partnerships, and teaching/learning
opportunities to benefit children, families, educators and others.
History:
In November of 1991 the West Philadelphia community came together at a town meeting.
The issue: the future of the abandoned stable building at 63rd and CatherineStreets. The
Fairmount Park Commission was anxious to turn it over to community control, for a purpose
and use decided by the residents. Neighbors decided to convert the
building into an Education
Center. A Steering Committee of 20 dedicated
volunteers fromcommunity, educational,
government and business institutions
was assembled by Mrs. CaroleWilliams - Green .....
and began the first
stages of development.
As the Cobbs Creek was the only Delaware Valley Estuary without a major nature center, it
was further decided to develop an Environmental Education facilityand institutionalize the
practice of Urban Environmental Education. Funding for renovations was secured from the
City of Philadelphia, theCommonwealth of Pennsylvania, William Penn Foundation and
other sources.
The new building contains meeting rooms, classrooms, administrative offices, laboratories and
exhibition space. A caretaker apartment has been built into the upper floor, and a caretaker is
living there. An interpretive trail system, picnic grove and other new landscape improvements
will be put into place adjacent to the renovated Center. The building's location in the stream
valley, well removed from the busy streets nearby, provides an idyllic setting for the pursuit of
environmental education.
Cobbs Creek:
Located in West and Southwest
Philadelphia, the CobbsCreek runs along the boundary of
Philadelphia
and Delaware counties and is surrounded on both sides by the Cobbs
Creek
Park section of the Fairmount Park system. Geographically the
boundaries of the Cobbs Creek
neighborhood are Market Street to the
North, Baltimore Avenue to the South, 52nd Street to
the East and 63rd
Street to the West. This section of Philadelphia has much historical
significance
as the home to the countries first watermill, a site of
early American Revolution battles, residence
of the great botanist
John Bartram, and the resting site for Betsy Ross. In addition to the
Cobbs
Creek Community Environmental Education Center and park, the
community presently offers
access to the city’s
oldest golf course, a recreation center, and skating rink.
