GOVERNOR AUTOHORIZES HALF MILLION DOLLAR APPROPRIATION
SPONSORED BY STATE SENATOR ANTHONY H. WILLIAMS
Thanks to Governor Tom Ridge and to Senator Anthony Williams, two giant voids will
soon be filled at the site of the future home of the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental
Education Center (CCCEEC). Renovations are currently underway to convert an historic
stable building in Fairmount Park, at 63rd and Catherine Streets, into an environmental
education center. The current budget, however, did not include two essential items to
provide access to the second floor, where classrooms and laboratories are planned.
The current scope of work includes an elevator shaft,

but no elevator and a stairwell with no staircase. An appropriation of one half million dollars
in Capital Redevelopment Assistance was sponsored by Senator Williams and authorized
by Governor Ridge to fill the gaps, so to speak, and to provide finished space on the second
floor. On Wednesday, July 12, 2000 Governor Ridge came to Cobbs Creek to announce
this significant investment in West Philadelphia. The capital campaign continues to raise
funds for completion of the laboratories, construction of caretaker?s quarters and other
planned improvements.

President's message:

FOLLOWING ARE EXCERPTS FROM THE PRESIDENT'S REMARKS
DURING GOVERNOR RIDGE'S VISIT ON JULY 12, 2000:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Education Center, Incorporated I want to say how truly grateful I am that the efforts of a grass roots community organization have been so generously acknowledged by so many of our good and trusted friends ? and Governor Ridge we are proud to count you among our good and trusted friends.

You are in good company. Our success has been the result of the partnerships we have enjoyed with many good people, organizations and institutions who believed in what this community was trying to do for itself – create a world class institution –in an African American neighborhod – to help community members establish a personal connection with our natural environment and to improve environmental education and science education in urban schools.

Many of our partners are represented here today...They – like you – believe that our students deserve the same high quality, high tech programs as students in wealthy suburban districts. They understand, as I know you do, that far too few African American youngsters are choosing careers in science. Fewer than three percent of our scientists are African American. They – like you – are supporting our commitment to a content rich science curriculum for Philadelphia school children and to providing a point of entry to rewarding careers in science for people of color and to building a greater awareness among city residents of the importance of a healthy natural environment.

Thank you Governor Tom Ridge.

Thank you Senator Anthony Williams.

And thank you to all of our good and trusted friends.

God bless you.
